A person was found dead Tuesday in a northeast Dallas apartment, two days after a fire at the Whitehurst Apartments left two others injured and displaced 20 residents, officials said. The individual, who lived alone and had not been reported missing, was discovered after family members requested a welfare check, Dallas Fire-Rescue reported.
The fire broke out early Sunday in the three-story building, prompting multiple rescues and heavy firefighting. Investigators believe it started accidentally on a first-floor balcony where flammable items were too close to a heat source. All 36 units were left uninhabitable, and the American Red Cross helped affected residents find temporary housing, according to Channel 8.
