Rep. Louie Gohmert Speaks in Defense of Capitol Rioters

U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert gave an hour-long speech on the floor of the House of Representatives today to defend the people who started the riot at the U.S. Capitol back in January. He said most of them were nothing more than “peaceful Americans” whose only crime was to support Donald Trump.

Rep. Gohmert said that those who were behind bars awaiting trial were “political prisoners held hostage by their own government.”

“You could call it a conspiracy because these people are working to silence anybody who supported Donald Trump,” Gohmert said, talking about the Justice Department and the federal judges who have denied bail for some of the accused rioters.

The January 6th riots left five people dead. Around 50 Texans were charged by the Justice Department. Texas leads the nation in accused insurrectionists.

“The overwhelming number of people caught up in this ‘unprecedented’ investigation … they’re actually nonviolent, peaceful Americans,” Gohmert said. “Their only crime was supporting Donald Trump and concern about the fraud Democrats have been telling us about in elections for many years.”

The House Homeland Security Committee recently announced that they would create a bipartisan commission to investigate the insurrection.
