Comptroller Pick Likely to Resign Senate Ahead of Appointment

State Sen. Kelly Hancock, R-North Richland Hills, is expected to resign from the Texas Senate to avoid legal problems when he is likely appointed state comptroller, a source told Bloomberg Law.

Outgoing Comptroller of Public Accounts Glenn Hegar will resign from his position at the end of the month, creating an opening for Republican Gov. Greg Abbott to name Hancock as his successor.

But an opinion from Attorney General Ken Paxton ruled that the governor could not do so, per Bloomberg. 

To sidestep that condition, Hegar instead will resign from the Senate and take a job within the state comptroller’s office, after which Abbott is expected to appoint him to take over the agency.

Hancock could announce his resignation by the end of Wednesday, according to the Quorum Report.
