American Airlines is ending mileage and loyalty point earnings on its cheapest fares, marking a notable shift in how members of its frequent flyer program are rewarded. According to CBS News, travelers enrolled in the airline’s AAdvantage program will no longer earn miles or Loyalty Points when purchasing basic economy tickets.
Previously, AAdvantage members earned two miles and loyalty points for every dollar spent on regular fares. Under the new policy, rewards will only apply to higher-priced tickets. American Airlines announced the change on Thursday, and it takes effect as of Dec. 17, CBS News reported.
“We routinely evaluate our fare products to remain competitive in the marketplace,” American Airlines said in a statement to CBS News. “Customers who purchase a basic economy ticket on December 17, 2025, and beyond will not earn AAdvantage miles or Loyalty Points towards AAdvantage status. Basic Economy customers will continue to receive one free personal item and one free carry-on bag, free snacks, soft drinks and in-flight entertainment.”
Basic economy fares were introduced by major airlines over the past decade to compete with low-cost carriers. These tickets typically come with restrictions, including limited seat selection, change fees and last boarding priority.
The move comes as American Airlines faces financial pressure. In its most recent quarter, the carrier reported a $114 million loss on $13.7 billion in revenue, according to a regulatory filing cited by CBS News.
According to CBS News, Scott Keyes, founder of travel deals website Going.com, said American Airlines is trying to limit the appeal of basic economy fares so travelers who might otherwise purchase higher-priced tickets are encouraged to upgrade, even if it costs slightly more.
