Former Texas state Rep. Jolanda Jones has endorsed former Houston City Council member Amanda Edwards in the runoff election for Texas’ 18th Congressional District, according to reporting from Houston Public Media.

Jones, who placed third in the November special election, announced her support for Edwards ahead of the Jan. 31 runoff against acting Harris County Attorney Christian Menefee, who led the initial vote but did not secure a majority.

“I watched her campaign, she works for her runoff spot, she’s independent, nobody’s puppet. She ran a clean race and didn’t campaign on taxpayer time or taxpayer dollars,” Jones said in a video posted on Instagram.

She added in a statement:

“Our community deserves representation now. I watched Amanda show up, listen, and lead with preparation and purpose. She earned support through hard work—not privilege… I am voting—and urging my supporters to vote—with conviction for Amanda Edwards.”

Jones previously served on the Houston ISD board of trustees and the Houston City Council before her election to the Texas House.

Edwards welcomed the endorsement, saying, “Jolanda Jones has never backed away from a fight for our community, and I’m deeply honored to have her support.” The Edwards campaign is focused on lowering costs, protecting freedoms, and delivering results for families in the district.

Menefee did not directly address Jones’ endorsement. In a separate statement reported by Houston Public Media, he highlighted support for his own campaign, saying, “We’re feeling the momentum… People want a fighter who meets the moment and delivers real results.”

The seat became vacant following the death of U.S. Rep. Sylvester Turner in March. Edwards is making her third run for the 18th District, while Menefee continues to serve as acting Harris County attorney as commissioners have yet to appoint a replacement.
